Sounds
No recorded audio is used. Every ambient sound is synthesised live in your browser with the Web Audio API, so there are no third-party sound files to credit or license:
| Sound | How it's made |
|---|---|
| Crickets | High sine tones gated by two square-wave pulses |
| Wind through sal leaves | Pink noise through a slowly moving band-pass, plus a high "leaf" hiss |
| Birds | Short pitch-swept sine chirps from random directions |
| Distant mandar | Pitched membrane hits (bass and treble heads) in a lilting cycle, low-passed and reverberated |
| Nagara and dhak | Deeper and higher membrane hits with rolls |
| Shehnai-like drone | Two detuned sawtooth tones through a band-pass, with vibrato |
| Crowd murmur | Pink noise through three wandering band-passes |
| Fire | Low rumble plus random noise crackles |
| Trekker engine | Detuned low sawtooth and square waves, low-passed, with piston chug and gear changes |
| Horn | Two square tones |
| Tuning static | Band-passed white noise bursts |
If a recorded CC0 or public-domain sound replaces any of these later, it will be listed here with its title, author, source URL, licence and date accessed.
Artwork
All illustrations are original SVG drawn in code for johar.fm. The wall borders and motifs are inspired by Sohrai and Khovar wall painting, the living art of women in Hazaribagh and across Jharkhand. No existing artwork was traced or copied. Colours take after the laal paar saree, sal forest and red laterite soil.
Fonts
- Yatra One by Catherine Leigh Schmidt, inspired by hand-painted signage on Indian roads. Used for the logo and the Nagpuri words on the dial. - Kalam by Indian Type Foundry, for the route hand-painted on the trekker. - Mukta by Ek Type, for everything else.
All three are licensed under the SIL Open Font License and served from this site. No requests go to Google Fonts.

Built by
johar.fm was made out of love for old Nagpuri songs, and for their lyrics most of all. Those songs talk about love the way people here actually feel it: a glance across the akhra, a name hummed on the trekker home, a promise made before the mandar starts. This is a small way of keeping them playing.
